I hate LinkedIn!! And other random thoughts
It's been about a month since I started my job search after getting laid off and it's going decently well despite it all. Things are moving! It's just all about finding the right fit for me this time.
But I wanted to write something about how much I fucking HATE LinkedIn!!!!
In theory, LinkedIn is good. A place where you can stay in touch with your coworkers without having to add them on an actual social media site and see what insane opinions they have is not a bad idea! Especially now that I'm in the stage of my career where I should be networking with people it's certainly come in handy. And people post jobs on there all the time!
When you actually go on it though you take insane psychic damage from the awful things people are constantly posting. It's like Facebook but worse. Recruiters complaining about candidates. Candidates complaining about recruiters. Really long boastful posts about nothing. People you don't know sharing a little too much about their personal lives. Articles about how everyone is losing their jobs.
I really like the subreddit LinkedIn Lunatics where they showcase some of the worst posts (and some of the funniest satirical ones too). I have to admit reading the comments on some of them is a nice palate cleanser after spending a few hours looking at jobs on LinkedIn.
My friends and I made fake LinkedIn accounts a couple years ago with fake business personas (mine was Jonathan McDisney and his profile picture was a stock photo of a business guy) and we would message each other stupid stuff all the time. It was the most fun I've had on that site ever until we got banned.
I think the real solution is to get better at not just endlessly scrolling on any website I go to.
Some random thoughts for this week...
The album Demon Days by Gorillaz turned 20 a few days ago. I don't know if I have a favorite album of all time but this one is certainly up there for me just because of how much of an impact it made on 11 year old Sean. I can't remember how I first heard of the Gorillaz but I distinctly remember having a burned CD with this album that I played on a portable CD player all summer of 05. It was my first exposure to a lot of artists... Blur, MF DOOM, The Pharcyde, De La Soul - all stuff I still listen to today. Feel Good Inc. is still that song but I think El Mañana is my favorite track (linked above). This was around the time I was really starting to get into music that I was discovering myself and it was kind of life changing for me. I might write more about this in the future...
I've been playing more Street Fighter 6 on my Twitch channel to try and force myself to play ranked and get better. My goal is to get to Diamond rank as Zangief by the end of the year. I got to Platinum 2 last time I played so we're making progress! I just have to actually learn combos and drive rush stuff now I guess lmao
Saw Ichiko Aoba in concert! She was amazing. I really love her new album Luminescent Creatures. I'm used to going to concerts where guys are like beating the shit out of each other in the crowd so it was really refreshing to go to a show where I didn't even need to put in earplugs. Ichiko Aoba's music is like lying in a really warm bath with the lights turned down low. Her opener too was outstanding... Hayden Pedigo. I became a fan of his instantly and I cannot wait to listen to his new album in a few short weeks!
I think I need to bring back my monthly zest posts now that I've been doing things like.. going outside and engaging with my hobbies again lol. So look forward to those!
