Drinking with Skeletons

01.12.2026

Last week was bad so I don't have that much to talk about. Society feels like it's crumbling ever faster, my first week back at work post holidays was a bit of a mess, had to squeeze in a doctor's appointment because I got anxious over something that turned out to not be a big deal, and I played my worst week of pinball during league ever. So not a great start to the new year but fuck it we ball.

January is usually a quiet month for me anyway. I was going through my iCloud photos a few weeks ago and I think I took like 15 pictures the whole month of January last year and this year is shaping up to be the same. I did go out last weekend at least, Saturday to my friends' place for a post new year dinner party/making resolutions/watching music videos night which was much needed, and Sunday to Game Underground to play some rhythm games and see how many copies of Halo 3 ODST I could pick up for the LAN next month (the answer was 1 and a copy of Modern Warfare 2).

I did want to write a response to my friend Ethan's post about personal computing though! I love having a personal computer and in the age of everything going to streaming I like owning my data and having a nice way to play video games with my friends. But at the same time I'm concerned about future proofing like everyone else is.

I generally like to have a computer for about 6-8 years before I go out and upgrade. My current desktop PC is from 2022 with a 3070ti graphics card, 32gb of ram and I think some form of i7 processor. My macbook is a little older, a 2020 M1 macbook pro with only 8 gb of ram but both of them still run wonderfully and do everything I need them to do. With the prices of everything going insane and so many parts companies ditching the consumer market to chase the AI bubble, part of me thinks "oh maybe I should get a 50 series card just in case" or "maybe I should suck it up and get that Switch 2 before the price inevitably goes up since I know I'll probably want one anyway." No one can predict what the market will look like 2-4 years from now, but I go out and do research on this stuff anyway and I realize that none of the advice out there is actually helpful because the only people that care enough to be writing and doling out takes for this kind of thing are the enthusiasts that need to have the biggest and best PC and upgrade every 2 years which really isn't my vibe.

I need to save my money for trips I'm going on which seems like the better option. I think a lot of it too is panic buying by enthusiasts that are hoping to flip older parts for more money to scared newbies to the PC scene which is kind of depressing but everything is a commodity to be traded now. Semirelated but I saw pokemon card guys (people who buy and sell not people who play) at Game Underground last weekend and the way they acted over these cards was truly insane. Maybe we all just need to go back to reading books or throwing rocks at each other instead.
